Okay, so the reasons why I'm a bad Canadian are varied and apt [I hate hockey, Roots and displaying the Canadian flag everywhere - especially when travelling]. I don't even get offended when people assume I'm American [shocking, I know]. However, let me submit to you at least one reason why I'm a good Canadian, on this most loving and tender of days. Today as part of my Valentine's Day intimate, homecooked dinner I made split pea soup from scratch. I figured it was appropriate as it is a very man's man kind of soup and therefore appropriate for a man [isn't that strange?]. And I just happen to be dating a man, so it all worked out.
This is the first time I've ever made my own split pea soup or really tasted anything outside of the Habitant [poverty soup!] variety. It is indeed a humble and inexpensive soup, but also incredibly rich tasting and very filling. I added fake bacon bits on top to give it that extra rugged appeal. I felt like a French-Canadian lumberjack or something. Which, really - isn't that exactly the type of feeling you are trying to create on Valentine's Day?
