Day Two Hundred and Eighty-Six - Hogs and Dogs

As my year o'thing-a-day comes to an end my mind is more and more often drifting towards my next blog project. I have the blog name picked out, but not really a full theme yet. In looking back over the 285 days I notice that one thing tends to stick out - my obsession with food. Eating it, not eating it, new things, new twists on old things and old favourites enjoyed in new settings. Also, my continued rants against the Price Chopper always amuse. So this thing is interesting in that it's a total true foodie thing, but something that poor impovershed me would not purchase. Thankfully Joseph has a generous family and they provided me with a little something special to make my Monday extraordinary. Tonight I made scrambled eggs with truffle oil. While my scrambled eggs are highly tasty, they are also totally ordinary and something we generally eat once a week. I experimented for the first time with truffle oil as I've hard that it is particularly tasty with eggs. It...kinda is?

The thing about my cooking is that I rarely do it with any degree of subtlety. At all. I like big, bold, bright flavours that kick your ass. Until recently I haven't been great @ cooking meat as I used to just cook the heck out of it [that's right - heck]. I liked to be bowled over a bit. So...I bowled a bit with the truffle oil. I should have known better as it was so strong - the smell of it in its wee bottle. I put in just over one teaspoon with the eggs...which was probably about one teaspoon too much. The entire apartment smelled of truffles for hours after I finished cooking. It's the most luxurious our house has ever smelled I'm sure. And while truffles aren't a bad match for eggs - they seemed a bit divorced in this dish. You tasted [and smelled] the truffles...pause...then the eggs. I think the next time I bust out the truffle oil I will consult a recipe - it's the teeniest bottle ever so I must use it sparingly.
