Day One Hundred and Sixty-Five - Ice Ice Baby

One of the many reasons that I fell in love with Italian was the prevalence and cheapness of two key ingredients in my life - espresso and gelato. For two Euros you could get one of each. Yum. I ate gelato multiple times a day in Italy and I thought that I had tried most of the flavours. I think I waited until our last night there before I tried stracciatella, which ended up being one of my very favourites. Anyway, good gelato is difficult to locate in Toronto, even though we have a metric tonne of Italian restaurants [it's a stiff competition between cheap sushi places and Italian restaurants].

Last night I hit the jackpot and was able to order a dessert sampler with three different kinds of gelato. There was just one on the menu that I had not tried, so I knew I had to have it and I ate gelato made with soy milk. Of the three I ordered [other two were pistachio and panna cotta - Joseph got sour cherry & chocolate]. It was soy milk and nocciola [hazelnut] and tasted divine. Kinda like Nutella or Ferrero Rochers - the insides...only slightly more classy [I'm all about class] . Joseph claims he could taste the chalkiness of the soy milk, but I couldn't and I was a bit disappointed in that because I like that about soy milk. The portions were huge - I like to think that one always has room for ice cream products as they are liquid...but yeah...this was a challenge. Don't worry, I emerged victorious.
