Day Two Hundred and Forty-Nine - New Coke

This is Sumol. Sumol is the Coca-Cola of Portugal. Actually, I strongly suspect that Coca-Cola is the Coca-Cola of Portugal, but it's fun to make sweeping generalizations about things that you don't know anything about. Though, living in a predominately Portugese neighbourhood for the past six years I guess I go know a bit about Portugal.

Since I do a lot of food-related things here on le blog I've decided to fully embrace it and attempt to find one new thing to eat @ our crummy grocery store or @ the local farmer's market each week. As our crummy grocery store is located in the same Portugese neighbourhood that we live in, they frequently do pages of specials on "Portugese Favourites" - I'm not sure of the authenticity of this claim, but apparently Sumol qualifies. I was thwarted in my attempt to purchase fava beans [another Portugese favourite apparently] so I drank Sumol instead. I was a little wary as it is an orange carbonated drink and as much as I love fizzy drinks the egg cream taught me an important lesson that fizzy can sometimes go so very wrong. Also, I loathe pulp. I was pleasantly surprised. It tastes quite a bit like Orangina, but with some extra zing. The more I drank the sweeter it got. Kinda ended up tasting like Baby Aspirins, but I love the taste of Baby Aspirins [or @ least I used to - this is probably why I'm so hooked on so many OTC meds], so that was a-okay with me. It's also supercute that it says "drink chilly cold" on the side of the glass bottle [I lurve glass bottled beverages]

and sorry your 4th of july celebration didn't go so well. we didn't get to see fireworks because it was storming.

I've just been quite into food - cooking, restaurants, shopping, etc. for quite some time so I'm always amazed @ how many new things there are out there for me to still try!

Yes, I've heard that July 4th was not so great in much of the country. I did see fireworks on Canada Day so I can't really complain.

Ok - as one of the coolest Portuguese people that Shelby knows (next to her neighbours of course) I have to admit, Sumol is the "drink of choice" in Portugal. I have the fondest childhood memories sipping back many of mini bottles of Sumol (Laranja/Orange as my personal fave, Ananas/Pineapple right behind) on the beaches in the Algarve, eating fresh bread and chourico/sausage sandwiches in the midday sweltering sun. Life couldn't be better and/or more decadent. Thanks for reminding me of that guilty pleasure.

Shelby by osmosis, you're officially Portuguese in my books.

Beijinhos (won't dare translate this),

And thank you Cristina for leaving such a cool comment! I love it when I get the little anonymous comment popping up in my inbox. I know it sounds dorky, but thanks for sharing.

I have passionfruit Sumol in my fridge right now [why are the bottles so small though?] and I saw the pineapple version yesterday on my way home.

So if I'm officially Portugese...I'm not sure how this whole vegetarian thing is going to work out.
